Ordinary chondrite, blackened (H5)
Find, pre-1915; 54.9 kg
The Rosebud meteorite was recovered as a conical-shaped mass. ~10 km south of Rosebud in neighboring Milam County. It had been known for at least several years before 1915 when it was presented to the University of Texas. Its original mass was 54.9 kg. Olivine (> 50 vol%) is dominant — in chondrules as both euhedral and fragmented crystals and also in matrix. Orthopyroxene and lesser amounts of maskelynite are also present. Chondrules are texturally diverse. Fe-Ni metal is concentrated within the matrix, but much of the metal (esp. kamacite) has weathered away. Troilite, also partially weathered away, is irregularly scattered thruout the meteorite. Small amounts of accessory chromite in small grains are present. Hydrous iron oxides are present as reddish stains and are concentrated along veins & cracks.
The main mass is with the University of Texas at Austin.
Synonym: 'Glen Rose (stone).'
