Ordinary Chondrite, black (L6)
Find,1946; 28,1 kg
A meteoritic mass was recovered. While compositionally an ordinary L (low iron) chondrite, Ar-Ar studies have revealed that Walters has suffered some rather severe shocks during the long interval between formation on the original parent body (~4.5 Ga BP) and its eventual impact with the planet earth. Tiny dispersed particles from such impacts have darkened protions of its silicate-dominated matrix. Several opaques (mostly Fe-Ni Phases and oxides) were reported by Ramdohr (1973).
The main mass is with the United States National Museum (Washington).
