Dubuque is a city located along the Mississippi River opposite of the Illinois-Wisconsin state line. The city began as a mining town, growing around the lead mines between the 1780s and the 1910s. Most of the mines in Dubuque County were within the present-day city limits of Dubuque and are now covered over. The yields from these mines provided most of the lead for the nation from the 1820’s to the 1850s, and mining revived again during the Civil War (from National Park Service website - "Julien Dubuque's Mines").
