Midas Mine
This mine is located East of Glacier. The ore consisted of float boulders of sulfides. The source of these boulders was never definitively found, and were possibly landslide debris. It was developed by 1600' of crosscuts, 1200' of trenching, and 1500' of core drilling. 4.5 tons of ore were shipped in 1951.
Deposit: 14 unpatented claims. Map of mine workings available, moen, 1967. ; info.src : 1 pub lit crushed zone in schist 4 to 5 ft wide contains large chunks of nearly solid pyrite, surrounded by a crushed schist and clay, nomerous quartz and calcite stringers also present. Large boulders of pyrite-chalcopyrite occur As float.
Development: Company explored to find source of cu bearing boulders, but were unsuccessful. Only limited exploration and assessment work has been undertaken since 1954.
Geology: The chalcopyrite bearing boulders and cobbles on the sureace of several claims may have originated As replacement deposits along shear zone in underlying argillite, however, exploration work has failed to reveal any sizable bodies of ore similar to that found As float on the surface the general appearance of much of the terrain resembles a landslide area if the surface material is landslide debris, the copper bearing boulders may have originated from some place other than the immediate area of the claims.
