An aggregate quarry in gabbro. Located on the North side of Edgemoor Road. Started about 1866 and owned by Mr. A, Petrillo. Workings were 600 feet long by 500 feet wide and 75 feet deep (or high at the face).
A quarry originally opened by P. P. Tyre in 1885 known as the Shellpot Quarry, working the local Brandywine Granite or “Blue Stone”, a tough hypersthene-quartz-andesine gneiss (Woodruff and Thompson, 1975) that was commonly quarried in the Wilmington area. Providing dimensional stone for construction in the region and curbstone for Germantown in Philadelphia, the deposit at Shellpot was remarked for it’s superior quality and was contracted to supply four-foot blocks for use as support for the Brooklyn and St. Georges bridges. By the mid 20th C. it was the last of the Wilmington “Blue stone” quarries still in operation, with Petrillo Bros., Inc. primarily producing riprap and crushed aggregate stone until it’s operations finally closed in 1968.
This quarry was backfilled and developed in 2002. (MRH-Wil, DE)
