A barite mine located about 6 miles SW of Houston (SE¼ SW¼, Sec 28, T.30N., R10W.). Started 1919 and closed 1942. Mineralization is in Jefferson City Dolomite. Owned by the Murphy Mining Co. Workings were 200 feet long by 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep.
Deposit type: Residual barite

Rock formation(s): Jefferson City;Cotton




Mineralization is blue baryte as a cement in collapse breccia in Jefferson City dolomite of Ordovician age. An isolated deposit.

Per Contributions to Bibliography of Mineral Resources 1955-59, Geological Survey Bulletin 1019, page 169:
"An abandoned open-pit barite mine six miles southwest of Houston, Texas County is the only known commercial barite deposit within a radius of 60 miles. Blue barite associated with limonite and calcite occurs as a filling which cements large blocks of dolomite in a collapsed solution cavity. The country rock is Jefferson City dolomite [Ordovician] containing chert and drusy quartz. This deposit was last operated during 1941 and 1942 by the Murphy Mining Company."
