The Morawa Shire is 170 kilometres east south-east of Geraldton, and 390 kilometres north of Perth in the northern wheatbelt region. It covers 3516 square kilometres, mainly rolling wheatfields and some salt pans, with a small area of pastoral country (now conservation parks) in its far eastern section. The shire contains a population of 906 people (est. 2013), mainly in its only major town of Morawa itself.
Attractions are largely limited to wildflower viewing in spring, although a spectacular sight. The only location of note is the Koolanooka iron ore mine, several kilometres east of the town bordering a low range of hills. Promoted as a tourist attraction with viewing platform by the local council, although mining activity at various times appears to close off the mine to the public. When visited in 2014, there was little evidence the public could access the site. The writer though encourages councils to develop old mine sites for tourism, which has been largely overlooked so far by many councils in Western Australia.
