Mitkof Island is an island in the Alexander Archipelago in southeast Alaska between Kupreanof Island to the west and mainland Alaska to the east. It measures roughly 16 km (9.9 miles) in width and 28 km (17 miles) in length, with a total land area of 539.7 km² (208.4 square miles), ranking as the 30th largest island in the United States. A large portion of the island is administered as part of Tongass National Forest. The terrain is generally low-lying and characterized by extensive muskegs, with Crystal Mountain rising to the highest elevation at 3,317 ft (1,011 m).
The island was first sighted by European explorers in 1793 by James Johnstone, an officer under George Vancouver during his 1791–1795 expedition. It appeared as a separate island from Kupreanof on an 1844 Russian chart, and its name was officially recorded in 1848 by the Russian Hydrographic Department as “Os(trov) Mitkova,” honoring Admiral Prokofy Mitkov.
