Marfa is located near the center of Presidio County. The area is known for a variety of minerals, but is particularly noted for a wide range of agate and chalcedony varieties, particularly plume and moss agates. The agate areas are dispersed, but notable occurrences have been mentioned near the Bishop Ranch and other areas south of Marfa, and particularly south of Plata along the Casa Piedra Road (Highway 169).
