A salt-S deposit/mine located 4.4 km (2.7 miles) S of Brazoria, on private land. Operated by the Jefferson Lake Sulfur Company. The host dome was discovered in 1925 by gravity. Explored for S by Texas Gulf during the period 1927-1928 and by Jefferson Lake (1936) (22 wells).
Mineralization is salt dome structure (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 255; USGS model code: 35a.7 (35ag); Deposit model name: Salt-dome sulfur), hosted in the Louann Limestone and salt. The ore body has a depth-to-bottom of 502.92 meters and a depth-to-top of 457.2 meters. The depth to the caprock is 530 feet, to the salt is 1,380 feet. Sulfur volume is 1.9 cubic miles to 10,000 feet of depth. Sulfur was mined from 1,500 feet to 1,650 feet of depth. The limestone is ultra pure. Local alteration includes biogenic alteration of anhydrock to limestone. Local rocks include alluvium.
Local geologic structures include a piercement salt dome.
Workings included the Frasch process of S production.
