Reward Claim; Breen and Wilson
GML 177. Lease owned in 1894 by the North-West Goldfields Company. Much trenching had been undertaken on an outcrop high on the hillside, and a tunnel 84 feet long. The reef was only one inch thick, of brown bands of hematite in quartz, with small amounts of pyrite. No crushings are reported. Another four leases were owned by the company a short distance north-west.
One was the former Breen and Wilson lease, with adjoining leases north and south, 1.5 miles north of the McPhee's Reward mine. The fourth was GML 170, location unknown, of several short drives in the side of a west facing hill, and a shaft on the hill's summit on the outcropping reef. One crushing is reported from this lease of 22 tonnes of ore yeilding 33 ounces of gold.
Reward Claim RC 166. 6 acres. Held in 1894 by Breen and Wilson (surnames). Located 1.5 miles north of McPhee's Reward in rugged hilly country.
The prospectors developed the mine across 1895, raising 20 tonnes of ore, before selling it to the North-West Goldfields Company. They also purchased the Walker and Cunningham lease adjoining to the north, and Geyer and Nix lease bordering to the south.
The company sank a shaft to 100 feet, and dug a tunnel 20 feet long, on a reef 8 inches thick. The reef passed into calcite and dolomite, and contained small quantities of non carbonates (?). It is thought the company abandoned the lease within a year or two, and by 1897 Breen was at the North Pole mine.
