Vote for your favorite mineral in #MinCup26! - Sphalerite vs. Anorthite
Both zinc ore Sphalerite and calcium plagioclase feldspar Anorthite have perfect cleavage that will split cleanly if you hit them with a hammer, but only one can claim a larger split of your votes!

ML 31. Copper mine. 5 kilometres east of the Croydon homestead.

The lode strikes north-east. Very early 20th Century a great deal of rooting around at the site was conducted by the British Exploration Australasian Company. The main shaft was down to 100 feet, but when visited 1908 was full of water to 45 feet of the surface.

The deposit is a shoot of copper ore, 40 feet long, oxidised in the upper levels, in clayey material, but with plenty large bunches of copper oxides, carbonates, silicates and sulphides. A 50 tonne parcel came in at 21% copper.

The deposit also has significant zinc, which led to problems processing the ore in its early days. Zincite was in the oxidised zone, and sphalerite below the water table. The deposit is 14% zinc. Below the water table was also noted pyrite and marcasite.

A study was done of the site in 1908 by the government mineralogist, who determined chrysocolla, malachite, cuprite, a brick red type of cuprite called tile ore, much chalcocite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, smithsonite, quartz, limonite, and large crusts and veins of calcite.

Eight shafts were on the lease, but only one was payable. Mining appears to have been limited and abandoned permanently afterwards.
