The mine produced 494.40 tonnes of ore at 26.10 g/t yielding 421.29 ounces of gold.
The original prospectors were not found, but in 1896 John Marshall purchases the lease. He also purchased several adjoining leases totalling 150 acres. C.H. Truscott is mine manager. Strieby (surname) is mine manager in 1897. Two new shafts were sunk at the north and south ends. Much money was then spent on what was a large low grade lode. August 1898 the leases were forfeited.
In 1902, prospector Scotty McQueen takes over the lease for alluvial gold. 1488 tonnes of ore is processed for an incredible 11 785 ounces. Many alluvial miners were working the Oversight Lead, some on the Great Oversight leases. The gold they recovered is not included in the figures at the beginning of this article. McQueen left the mine, and travelled the world with the money he gained.
The lode is described as conglomerate, iron, and kaolin between two well defined walls, bulging to 10 feet wide in places, and other points only one foot wide. A rich vein of ironstone ran through the lode, although there was also lower grades of gold throughout the lode.
The Great Oversight Syndicate took over the mine in 1904. A battery was erected, opened with much ceremony by local mayor R.C. Jones. John Quigley is mine manager. Gold was found by the syndicate at the 300 foot level two years later, but little other information was found.
There is a small abandoned open pit just south of the Bulong intersection. It is the only modern gold working on the goldfield. This is on or near the former Great Oversight mine, near the former town boundary. No information was found on the pit and is needed. Many shafts and alluvial workings extend south along the Oversight Lead.
