Cuddia Mida (Cuddia di Mida; Kuddia Mida), Isola di Pantelleria, Provincia di Trapani, Sicilia, Italia
Cuddia Mida is a parasitic cone (591 m) located on the north flank of Montagna Grande.
Cuddia Mida is the FRL for anorthoclase, described under the name “Natronorthoklas” by Förstner [Foerstner] (1877) and later renamed anorthoclase by Rosenbusch (1885).
Cuddia Mida is a well-known occurrence for aenigmatite, a mineral described (Foerstner, 1881) from the pantellerite lavas of Pantelleria under the name “cossyrite” (after Cossyra, the ancient name for Pantelleria). Titanium was not recorded in Foerstner's analysis and for a number of years cossyrite was considered as a varietal name for the apparently titanium-free aenigmatites of Pantelleria. Dittrich, that analysed cossyrite crystals collected by Soellner on the rim of the Cuddia Mida cone, eventually showed that cossyrite was titaniferous (Soellner, 1909) [see http://www.mindat.org/loc-2098.html, for complete references on aenigmatite of Pantelleria].
Note: In Handbook of Mineralogy, Volume 2, by Anthony et al. this locality is misspellt as Cuddua Mida.
