Tjuvhola (Tjovehedderen), Neset, Bygland, Agder, Norge
This naturally formed hole or cave in the side of the Eiekefjell mountain is known under several names. Monen (2016) consistantly calls it the Tjuvhola, while the Setesdalswiki calls it the Tjovehedderen. Tjovhola translates into "the thief's cave".
The cave is clearly visible from the Riksveg 9 coming from the south.
It is assumed that the hole formed through the workings of wind and waves in a time the sea level was much higher.
A Danish geologist studied the hole and found fragments of bone of pigs, cows and sheep, and additionally the claw of a bear. Caves like these housed people throughout history, but often they were thieves or other shady persons.
When in 1845 the Åraksbø smelter came into production, they used fluorite from the Tjovhola as flux.
Collecting is only allowed with permission of the owner, Olav Neset, owner of the nearby Neset camping.
