Ora Banda Amalgamated NL developed the mine from the mid 1930's. Regular crushings are seen in the late 1930's, and to a lesser extent the 1940's.
Safety did not seem paramount in the 1940's. January 1943, Lawrence Topp (39) is killed from a fall of earth. Nearly all deaths during much of the Twentieth Century at Western Australian mines was seen as accidental with no-one to blame. Unusually in this case the coroner was highly critical of the lack of supervision from mine management which it saw as leading to the tragedy.
William Marshall (64) is killed at the mine in January 1946, and James McKenzie (62) is seriously injured from the same incident. They had landed at the 600 foot level, just as a blasting operation took place. Herbert Theodore Kingdon is mine manager. He is noted in 1954, as putting through 70 tonnes of ore through the Ora Banda state battery in his own name, probably on tribute.
In 1938, Jim Hall and Harry Simpson were overcome with fumes underground, but survived after a hospital stint.
In 1954, E.D. Herd and V. Perecich as the Coronation Syndicate, put through 58 tonnes of ore at 5 oz per tonne. They have an option from the Ora Banda Amalgamated NL, which is in liquidation by this stage. The lease had been the subject of two applications for forfeiture due to breaches of labour conditions. While the warden judged in favour of the applicants, he refused to take the leases off Ora Banda Amalgamated.
In 1980, private firm, West Coast Holdings control the nearby Wentworth mine. They have an option to buy from United Goldfields Corporation the Prince of Wales and Coronation mine, both virtually next to each other.
The location is where the Black Flag Road turns sharply from heading west to south (if travelling south). A large cleared area borders the road. This indicates more recent activity, either from a bulldozer or pit since filled in. This has destroyed the historic workings. Immediately east is a tailings heap, small pit and underground workings of the Prince of Wales mine.
