Field geologist J.T. Jackson stated in 1917, the laterite caps in the hills east of Comet Vale contain magnesite, quartz, common opal, chalcedony and plasma - the latter being a leek green coloured form of chalcedony often confused with prase. The laterite in places is chromiferous he states.
E.S. Simpson states he located variably coloured chalcedony east of Comet Vale, as nodules and veins in the laterite. Colours varied from colourless, grey, milky white, yellow and bright green. The green chalcedony as veins 15 to 22 mms wide, coloured by nickel rather than chromium, as a mixture of granular quartz, fibrous chalcedony and opal.
Fetherston et al states good quality chrysoprase is found east of the Happy Jack mine, from the weathering of Walter Williams Formation. The Blue Speck Creek area is 1.5 kilometres south-east of Happy Jack, claimed to show veins of gem quality chrysoprase.
