A few days after hearing an explosion during the night, a Mr. Xu Ping discovered a leaking roof and a black stone on the floor. Major phases in the meteorite are olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, kamacite, taenite, and troilite. Olivine (Fa18.4) and pyroxene (Fs16.3Wo1.2) are equilibrated and each is uniform in composition as is characteristic of petrologic type H5 chondrites. Plagioclase grains range from 2 to 50µm in size. Minor amounts of chromite, high-Ca pyroxene, and phosphate are also found.

Dongyang is one of the 178 recognized H5 ordinary chondrites falls currently listed at The Meteoritical Bulletin Database (January 2016). The H5 type is the most common type of fall in the H chondrite geochemical group.
