A former lode Au-Cu-Pb-Zn occurrence/mine located in the SW¼ sec. 34, T16N, R8E, MDM, about 2.2 km SSW of Grass Valley proper, ENE of The Punchbowl, on private (patented) land. This claim is part of a 1,200 acre area owned by the Empire Star Mines Co. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.

NOTE: USGS MRDS file #10086478 presents geographic coordinates of 39.19406 & -121.14604, placing this locality in sec. 1, T15N, R7E, which does not match any credible description of its actual location. The issue was resolved by locating the North Star shaft on the topo map in sec. 34, in agreement with the description of its location.

Mineralization is hosted in granodiorite and diabase. The ore body is irregular, pinch-and-swell in form, strikes E and dips N. The veins average 16 inches thick. The diabase is brecciated along the veins forming a gouge zone around the walls. Sulfides average 2%. Local alteration includes oxidation to 5 to 150 feet of depth with high-grade ore. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).

Local geologic structures include NE-striking fissures and faulting with a strike N & dip 50W.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 4,572 meters and an overall depth of 1,463.04 meters, and comprised of shafts, a winze, drifting, raises and stopes on many levels.

Production data are found in: Logan, Clarence August (1941); MacBoyle, Errol (1919); Logan, Clarence August (1930); Goodwin, Joseph Grant (1957).

Production statistics: Year: 1919 (accurate): ^3,180 pounds Cu; 222,000 pounds Pb. Year: 1933 (accurate): ^0.38 ounce Au/ton (11 grams/metric ton).
