The name could indicate a Polish or Russian origin of the original prospectors but no information could be found. This remote, out of the way mine, was visited by the Premier of Western Australia Sir John Forrest, in December 1895. He was taken on a hurried tour of the underground workings. The mine had recently been purchased by his brother Alexander Forrest, the Perth Mayor.
Impressive stone laden with gold was brought into Coolgardie in July 1899 from the mine. This source states the mine had been in the hands of a company until late 1898, when they abandoned the lease. It was then taken up by working miners De Jarlais, Anderson, Longstaff and Thiele (surnames). The shaft had been sunk to 80 feet below the surface, where the ore body had gone from a few inches wide on the surface to 5 feet wide. A vein in the narrow parts yielded specimen stone returning about 500 ounces of gold.
Nothing more is found until 1937. The old Sarmatia lease is now P.A. 1170S. 49 ounces is stated as being taken from a small leader near the surface. The prospector is not named.
