This mine only came to public prominence due to complaints from the Pride of Jourdie and Pride of Jourdie North mine owners of how they could not access water from the United lease for their batteries. The government well was located on the United lease, and the United owners had installed a pump to sell water to neighbouring mines. They found this unprofitable. While the owners of the nearby batteries had access to pump water themselves from the well, the cost and dodgy pipes laid across almost one kilometre, caused the batteries to have to close at intervals.
