A small abandoned open pit bordering the west side of the Jaurdi Hills Road. The historic Pride of Jourdie location is to the north-east, bordering the east side of the road. The pit at Black Cat North was developed briefly in 2001 by Kinver Mining NL (later re-named Toro Mining Pty Ltd). Approximately 40 kilometres north-west of Coolgardie.
Historic mining occurred in the area from 1897 until around 1915. From 1966 to 1972, CRA Exploration Ltd explored the area for nickel without success. Several more companies explored through the 1980's and 1990's. Coolgardie Gold took over the tenements from 1990 until 1997. Their investigations estimated 586 000 tonnes of ore at 2.98 g/t in total at the Black Cat, Panther and Jaurdi locations, although the estimate was JORC non-compliant. Kinver Mining Limited purchased all the remaining leases in the area for A$300 000 in 1998. In 2001, it developed small open pits at Black Cat North and nearby Panther. The company suffered losses, and became heavily in debt from these operations and the leases were sold to Ramelius Resources. Other leases in the area, went through a complex history of changing ownership, until consolidated under Canadian based CBR Gold Corporation. The area was explored by Apex Geoscience Ltd on behalf of Toro Mining Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of CBR Gold Corp) from 2004 to 2009.
At Black Cat the primary gold zones are in bedrock, at the contact between a wide basalt unit, dipping 35 degrees west, and an east trending granodiorite unit. Over the primary deposit is a high gold grade supergene blanket, near the base of the oxidised laterite. Above this is 15 to 20 metres of overburden. There is also an un-developed Black Cat South deposit.
