The Cheapside Gold Mine can be found 15 kilometres south-west of Coolgardie, and on the opposite side (west) of the Lord Bob Gold Mine on the Queen Victoria Rocks Road.
For at least 35 years the mine was owned and operated by the Marritt family. Initially in the years before 1900 it was developed by the Busby brothers, who obtained gold from the upper levels. However, they were not experienced miners and abandoned the mine once the near surface gold was exhausted. The three Marritt brothers took over in 1900. This was Jack and Rowe Marritt. In time Rowe left, and the third brother John joined.
The lease was 18 acres with a 8 x 4 foot shaft in the centre down to 150 feet. South of the shaft was an immense winze or chamber put down to 90 feet. In 1908, when the mine was inspected, they had driven 50 feet south-east on a reef of sulphide ore 11 feet wide. To that point 2060 tonne of ore had been treated for 1577 ounces of gold averaging 6 dwt.
In 1908, the Adelaide based Westralian Waihi Gold Mining Company took a 12 month option over the mine and neighbouring Cheapside North (Gympie Jim) lease. The Marritt brothers continued mining after the option expired.
Crushings were found under J. Marritt for 1913. However in 1919 the crushing is in the name of G. Knight, and 1921 Knight and Marritt.Also by 1921 the mine is described as being owned by Marritt and son. By this stage the mine had produced 5000 tonnes of ore for 3000 ounces of gold averaging 14 dwt.
The son was Frances James Marritt. John Marritt applies for a 6 month extension of a prospecting lease at Cheapside in 1925. By this stage the Marritt brothers may have been advanced in age, and/or the mine near exhaustion. The last information found was Francis James Marritt applying for the mine in his name in August 1936.
