Shortly after the discovery of gold at the Lloyd George location, C.F. Clayton and Young discovered gold bordering to the south-east of this lease. It was to become the Carlton gold mine, a large low grade body of gold bearing ore. It is located about 25 kilometres south-west of Coolgardie, and 10 kilometres north-west of the Queen Victoria Rocks Road, in an area of historic small gold mines, that have not seen any activity since the early 1930's.

In 1921, W.H. Vale entered an agreement with Clayton and Young to work the mine. Ore was being treated at the refurbished 5 head battery on the Reform lease (originally De Beers) about 1 kilometre to the west. The shaft was down to 130 feet. A 'simple' form of sulphide ore containing coarse gold was found on the 100 foot level, and is where most of the ore was being obtained.

In 1923, the Pioneer Prospecting Syndicate (Ware brothers of Adelaide) took out a 6 month option over the mine, and floated the Carlton Option Development Company to work the lease. It is assumed this was unsuccessful, as no more information about the mine was found after this date.

Effectively swallowed up into the Lloyd George mine.
