The Gibraltar Gold Mine is approximately 25 kilometres south-west of Coolgardie, and 6 kilometres south-east of the Bullabulling gold mines. It occupies an isolated position, and in recent times has been viewed as a potential satellite operation to the Bullabulling mines.
In 1994, Samantha Gold Mines NL (later Resolute Mining) acquired the mine from the Lyn Martin-John Schulberg Syndicate. The mine had been developed by the Electrum NL and Pan Australia Mining Ltd joint venture across 1987 to 1988. The mine was then placed into care and maintenance, having failed to generate a profit, forcing Electrum NL into receivership.
The mine produced during this short period 1.6 Mt of ore at 1.54 g/t yielding 80 705 ounces of gold. It has an Inferred Resource of 3.74 Mt of ore at 1.14 g/t for 137 000 ounces. A subsequent Norton study in 2014 estimated 1.94 Mt ore at 1.15 g/t yielding 71 700 ounces of gold.
The mine is found on the Gibraltar Trend which varies in strike from east-west to north-west to south-east. The geology of the deposit is considered similar to the Bullabulling Gold Mines, and geology information can be found under this Mindat heading. Only limited drilling has taken place though at Gibraltar.
