About 300 metres south of the processing plant is an abandoned pit, with a far smaller/shallower pit 50 metres north-west. Deep South as a title was given precedence as it is named in the geology literature. Maps provide a variety of names for the location, and the reason is not totally clear. D39 and D43 are possibly names for shears found in the mines, and people began to refer to the locations as such.
