The site is north-east of Cue about one kilometre, and directly north of the Water Tank scenic lookout. The area is now a very shallow pit from minor recent mining, and is marked at the time of writing by a small raised fuel tank.
As a prospecting lease it was originally known as Three Crowns. C. B. O'Brien then took over the lease naming it Eldorado. Rich gold was found in a cross cut at the 65 foot level of a 110 foot deep shaft. The reef was said to be 3 feet wide. One source states the mine was sold to English capitalists but no information was found. Another source indicates a revolving ownership of prospectors. O'Brien used the money from the sale to purchase the Great Britain Hotel (later known as the Railway Hotel), in Cue, and was elected onto the local municipal council in 1897. In this same year subsequent owners of the mine discovered more gold at the 126 foot level, some stone at 20 oz/t.
