The City of Chester gold mine (GML 252) is three small open pits some 15 kilometres west of Cue, and 200 metres north-east of the Big Bell turnoff along the Cue-Beringarra Road. They were mined between 1999 to 2007 by Normandy Mining and Harmony gold. The pits are half filled with salty water.
The City of Chester had an estimated resource of 707,000 tonnes at 1.94 g/t yielding 42,000 oz of gold. Between 1895 to 1918 it produced 1,359 tonnes for 1,045 oz.
The first date the mine is mentioned is 1894. In September 1895, the mine was floated in London for ₤50,000. The syndicate purchased the mine for ₤1,500. Regular crushings are reported over the next couple of years. A boiler purchased from the Fortune of War mine was erected in 1897, as well as a 20 head battery. After this it entered a period of small time mining by local prospectors.
Hollingsworth and Simpson controlled the mine by 1901. The former also owned the Dorothy lease at the Chesterfield goldfield.
In 1912, E.R. Heydon and Edward Kelly took over the mine. O'Connor (surname) owned the mine before them. A man named Mulligan was charged with stealing ore from the mine, which he sent through a battery. According to Mulligan, he was owed money by O'Connor, who had promised him the ore. However, no sooner had this promise been made, when Heydon and Kelly took over the mine. He was fined ₤25 in the Warden's Court.
Several crushings occurred across 1913 from a plant Heydon and Kelly had erected and purchased from Eelya.
Oliver, Deeble and Curtis (surnames) sent through several crushings in 1925. Wilton and Dean (surnames) sunk a shaft and found several small slugs near it on the surface in 1931. Buegge sent through a small crushing from a lease near the mine in 1932.
