The site is marked by an abandoned open pit which borders the north side of the Cue-Beringarra Road. The mine was developed as an open pit by Nomandy and Harmony Gold between 1999 to 2007. The cleared area immediately east of the pit once housed the plant.
Very little information was found historically, largely 1895 to 1897 only, and some exploration interest in the 1930's. The reef was said to be rubbly with green tinted kaolin.
The earliest report was 1894 when three prospecting shafts had been sunk, 2 to 40 feet, and a third on a neighbouring parallel reef to 20 feet. At this time the mine was owned by the Golden Gate Gold Mining Co. J. T. Charles was mine manager. In 1896 the mine was sold to the Cuddingwarra Gold Mining Company, for ₤15,000, paid in instalments until 1897. At that time the name disappears, but may have been included in details of neighbouring mines this company controlled.
Sometime in the mid 1930's, the Great Fingall Co which operated a mine on the Day Dawn field, conducted some drilling at Golden Gate and partially sunk a shaft before abandoning the project.
In 1938, the Golden Gates Mining Co Ltd was formed in Perth to undertake drilling at the site, which commenced the following year.
Estimated resource still at the mine is 744,000 tonnes of ore at 1.49 g/t yielding 36,000 oz.
