The Princess Royal Mine is near the old hospital ruins, just south-west of Cue. Remains of mining activity from one hundred years ago would indicate the area is just east of the ruins, between the old hospital and the highway.
Limited information found. In 1895 the leases in the area are held by the Western Australian Gold Recoveries Limited. Thomas Butement is mine manager. In October 1898, the Princess Royal was one of a large number of mines purchased by the London and Globe companies in London. These were headed by London based American fraudster Whittaker Wright. A subsidiary company was set-up called the Princess (Murchison) Gold Mining Company. This was wound-up and refloated several times, in each case Whittaker and his cronies pocketing large amounts of shareholder funds. This speculation continued with several companies. The mine was left un-worked. Meanwhile, local Cue folk were attempting to have the leases forfeited, with support of the Mine Warden. The Minister for Mines over several years would override these decisions, leading to highly critical press coverage, being rare for the time. Nineteen mine employees sued the company in 1898 for lost wages.
In 1909, the mine was finally allocated to another syndicate headed by James Chesson and J. McDermott, as an option for 4000 pounds. They uncovered 18 000 pounds of gold from 1908 to 1912. However, in 1912 they went cap in hand to the Minister of Mines stating all the money had been spent purchasing machinery and developing the mine. They stated it would close without further government assistance. They had already received money from the government in 1911. The Minister stated he was sympathetic towards the request, at least to the town folk gathered for his visit. No money was forthcoming and the mine closed.
