Käskorb sand pit, Kelmis, Liège, Wallonia, Belgium


The Käskorb sandpit was in use from the 1960's until the 1980's producing sand for road construction.
The quarry exploited a dune formed in the Upper Cretaceous period.
You have to imagine that this ridge used to be completely closed.
People walked from the Heidkopf to the Preuswald (Ruhr area).

Sand was used for the construction of the " Autoroute Roi Baudouin Liège-Aachen".
The A3 (part of the E40), between Liège and the German border at Aachen, opened end 1964.

The excavation was carried out from both sides until the breakthrough.
Pelzer was digging on the Käskorb side (east) and on the other side 2 brothers from Montzen were digging from the Rue de la Ruhr (west).

The locality produced, beside sand, some very fine petrified wood, all driftwood from quite a lot of different species.
The quarry is now completely overgrown with trees and bushes.
