Dermbach Meteorit, Dermbach, Wartburgkreis, Thüringen, Deutschland


Iron, Ni-rich, ungrouped (I-ung, D)
Found 1924; 1.5 kg

A small lump of somewhat weathered Fe-Ni metal was bequeathed to the Dermbach Museum. Subsequent analysis has revealed an unusual meteorite (~70 vol% Fe-Ni metal, 25 vol% troilite, and highly shocked accessory schreibersite). Metal nodules with 42% Ni and 24% Ni help to make Dermbach one of the most Ni-rich meteorites recovered. A possible relationship to IVA irons has been suggested, but has not been resolved at this time.

Iron-60 measurements suggest that the Dermbach meteoroid entered the earth's atmosphere with a radius of approximately 5-10 cm. As of 2000 approximately half of the meteorite mass (~0.7 kg) still remained in Dermbach.
