A former Cr-Fe occurrence/mine located in sec. 34, T4N, R11E, MDM, 1.3 km (0.8 mile) S of Buena Vista Mountain (coordinates of record), on the northern edge of Bear Mountains (ridge) (on the floor of a valley about ¼ mile wide, near the center of the SW¼ of the section). Owned by G.D. Vogelsang, California (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a Cr-Fe deposit comprised of a group of pods & lenses. The ore body strikes N35W and dips 75N at a thickness of 91 meters, a width of 15 meters and a length of 15 meters. The deposit is lenticular in form in a shear zone. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology and the secondary control was faulting. Wallrock alteration is intense (carbonitization). The group of pods & lenses are of massive chromite and are traceable for 230 feet along the shear zone. Most of the country rock is slickensided. The ore is medium-grained chromite having a black color and a sub-metallic luster. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).

Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of several open cuts.

229 long tons of 43-46% chromic oxide ore have been shipped. Operations ceased when the WWI armistice was signed. About 15 tons of ore were still stockpiled at the mine in 1943. More lenses could probably be located with deeper mining.
