Iron meteorite, octahedrite (IIIAB, Om)
Fell, 24 December 2014 ; 738 g

The Nyaung iron meteorite (Ni 7.7%) is one of those meteorites which has received very little attention in the readily available meteoritical literature. Furthermore, it is also the least massive of the 11 observed IIIAB falls. Its classification as an octahedrite allows us to deduce the presence of both kamacite and taenite as well as probable plessite. The brief remarks of Wasson et al. (1998) also imply that schreibersite should be present as well, but there is no specific allusion to the mineralogy of Nyaung itself.

IIIAB irons are the most abundant type of iron meteorite accounting for ~27% of all iron meteorites identified through 2014. Almost all of the Nyaung mass has been held by the Geological Survey of India in Calcutta.
