Bright greenish lights and detonations accompanied the fall of the Akyumak meteorite just before it plunged into the ground creating a 50 cm diameter, 90 cm deep hole. The surface of the meteorite displays the normal combination of pits and regmaglypts occasioned by its fiery entry into the atmosphere. Small samples made available for study reveal a well-developed Widmanstätten pattern dominated by kamacite, taenite, and plessite. Plentiful Neumann bands indicative of either pre-terrestrial or entry shock are present. Finger plessite is often rimmed by taenite bands. Other phases were quite sparse in the available specimens— only daubréelite is mentioned in the early 1988 report. In a later metallurgical study, cohenite was also detected.
Akyumak is the latest and largest of the 4 witnessed IVA iron falls. The largest remnant mass (18 kg) is with the Department of Geology, University of Elâzig. It is possible that the Turkish literature has additional information, but these postings often lack English abstracts.
