ABSTRACT ... The choice of the Carriço site was the result of a review of potential natural gas storage sites in Portugal. The Carriço salt structure was selected based on a multi-criteria screening and ranking process, as the best candidate site from technical, economical and environmental viewpoints. Carriço is situated in Pombal, near Figueira da Foz. Its geographical location (near the coast and close to the national gas grid network), the low density of population living near-by and the fact that salt mining permits were already existing, were the majors advantages of the site..."

"In 1999, the construction of a gas storage facility in Carriço started in order to strengthen the national natural gas supply system. So far, six wells have been drilled and leached. At present, five caverns are used for gas storage, a sixth is being leached and will start gas storage operations in 2014.
The caverns are located in a salt structure which belongs to the Dagorda formation at depths of 1,000 m to 1,500 m and have volumes ranging from 350,000 m³ to 750,000 m³."
