A forestry road with cuttings containing some good quartz specimens. The gate is usually locked and permission for entry needed. Quartz crystals and box-works are abundant over a wide area here. Although there is little real outcrop, most appears to indicate silicification of fault and breccia zones in the Precambrian Weld River Dolomite underlying the Permian rocks in this area. The box-works indicate a complex history: the dolomites were first brecciated, then the breccia zones were cemented with quartz; crystals appear to have grown in some cavities at this stage. The dolomite was later dissolved away, leaving cavities where a later generation of quartz crystals grew. Some of these crystals were smoky, yellow, brown or glassy, but most are milky. They lack prism faces, typical of rapidly-nucleated multiple crystal growth under relatively low temperatures, but still reach 30 mm in length.

NOTE: This site is within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and as such any mining, quarrying, fossicking or disturbance of the ground is prohibited and is an offence. Permission to access this site is not given and the gate on the access road is permanently locked.
