Mouth of Wilson, Virginia is near the confluence of Wilson Creek and the New River, and close to the NC/VA border. The New River originated from a breakthrough event (estimated as early as 300 mya) near Mouth of Wilson that drained an impounded lake, with its initial landscape influenced by volcanic activity at Mount Rogers (760-750 mya, Grenville Orogeny).

As the lake drained, the southwest-flowing paleo-river—which had carved the canyons now surrounding the manmade Lake Watauga, TN—ended with this breakthrough, marking the beginning of the New River’s course. The original crossing point of the paleo-river was approximately 25 miles southwest in NC/TN, shifting to a new crossing point in NC/VA.

The initial formation of the New River’s modern-day path in Grayson County, VA, was triggered by the Fries Fault overthrust (5 miles southeast of Mouth of Wilson). The over-thrust went from the southeast to the northwest around 300 million years ago during the Alleghenian Orogeny, when the region was at 0-500 feet elevation, and it combined with the uplift of a mountain ridge along the NC/TN border to cut off the paleo-river. The full development has evolved over a span initiated 300 million years ago to the present, with gradual elevation uplift and ongoing river bed erosion.

The confluence with Wilson Creek likely influenced an eastward shift in the New River’s path as it developed gradually. The New River’s course evolved east through Grayson County before heading north-northwest toward Wythe County, eroding hundreds of feet of basement rock over time to shape the current landscape.
