The Revoltosa is an obsidian claim/mine currently (2012) being worked for different kinds of obsidian.

The mine is located about 15 km east of the village of San Andreas on Mount San Andreas, which is the tallest mountain in the area. It is about 2 kilometers from the border with Nayarit province at an elevation of about 2000 meters in a pine "forest".

The mine produces pure black obsidian and a variety of "rainbow" coloured obsidians.

The workings are open cast and blocks of many hundreds of kg are found. Some of the very best rainbow-coloured obsidian is found here, as well as "golden sheen" obsidian. Also, it is not far distant from one of the best old fire opal mines. (Information from Alfredo Banos, claim holder of the La Revoltosa mine [2012]).

This mine has produced much of the fine Mexican rainbow obsidian that has come to the marketplace during the last five to ten years. Dr. George Rossman of Caltech has determined that the colouring agent in the rainbow obsidian are oriented nanocrystals of hedenbergite (Ma et al., 2001; Nadin, 2007).
