A series of road cuts on Texas Routes 118 and 166. The junction of these two roads is about 20 miles south of Kent, TX and 20 miles NW of Fort Davis, TX.

NOTE: Coordinates for the road intersection are provided in the file for that element of the locality string.

Steve Stuart obtained an egg carton of material from the giveaway table at the 2012 Rochester Symposium's Micromounter's Playroom. The locality was given as 'Route 166 Roadcut, 35-40 miles south of Kent, Jeff Davis County, Texas'. Minerals listed include cryptomelane, tridymite, opal and chalcedony. The material was contributed by Janet and Paul Clifford. Subsequent investigation indicates that the material may have been collected by Tom Tucker and Erich Grundel from 2007 through 2010. Mr. Grundel gave a presentation on the Texas roadcuts at the 2010 Rochester Mineralogical Symposium; an abstract appears in Rocks and Minerals, Vol. 86, No. 3, May/June 2011, p. 271. Communication with Tom puts the locality on Rte 118, about 1-2 miles NW of the intersection with Rte. 166. See the link to a Mindat thread Steve started after the Rochester Symposium, listed below.
