The occurrence has been known since the 19th century (1887-1888), when fossilised tree stumps and trunks were first discovered during the quarrying of silicified sandstone concretions (locally erroneously called quartzite) for building stone and cobblestones nearby (in Overlaar).

Between 1969 and 1972, during the construction of a section of highway from Brussels to Liège (originally named the E5, renamed the E40 in 1986) fossilised tree stumps and trunks of Glyptostroboxylon sp. were rediscovered on top of a 10 cm (ca. 4 inches) thick layer of lignite. They were again rediscovered in 1975-1976, during the construction of the R27 southern bypass of the city of Tienen, and in 2000, during the construction of the high-speed railway line from Brussels to Cologne.

The site has been open to the public since 20 June 2003 and has been dubbed the “Geosite Goudberg”. The name “Goudberg” (“Gold Mountain”) is first mentioned in 1340 and is most likely derived from the “golden yellow” colour of the surrounding arable land at the time.

The site is a fenced-in protected area, and collecting is strictly prohibited.

The Geosite is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM during the months of June, July, August, and September. Admission is free. A guided tour costs 50 euros per group (maximum group size: 25 people). To book a guided tour, contact the Hoegaarden tourist office at https://www.lokaalbestuurhoegaarden.be/toerisme

“The Geosite Goudberg is an educational exhibition park in Hoegaarden in Belgium. The park is home to a petrified forest of bald cypresses from the Paleocene, which is unique in Western Europe due to its size. It provides an overview of 55 million years of geological history.

During the construction of the E40 in 1970, dozens of petrified trees came to light in Hoegaarden. At the time, there was not enough time to save them. During the preliminary study of the high-speed railway line Brussels-Cologne alongside the highway in the early 1990s, the necessary measures could be taken.

In March 2000, the petrified trees were excavated from the clay and silt layer. Two large trees were moved to the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels; another large specimen ended up in the Museum Naturalis in Leiden.

The entire tree has been transformed into a stone version of itself, preserving the internal characteristics of the wood. This slow process is called silicification.

The petrified trees are the remnants of a 54.9 million-year-old subtropical swamp forest. Similar remains of fossil trees have been found in Overlaar, Oorbeek and Wommersom. The forest was therefore of considerable size.

Microscopic examination of the trees' structure has determined that these trees are the remains of bald cypresses. Related species still grow in swamps in the United States (genus Taxodium in Florida and Georgia) and in China and Vietnam (genus Glyptostrobus).”
