West Sussex is a ceremonial county in south-east England, United Kingdom, bordered by East Sussex to the east, Hampshire to the west, Surrey to the north, and the English Channel to the south. It covers an area of approximately 2,000 km² and contains a diverse landscape of coastal plains, chalk downs, wooded hills, and river valleys. Major rivers include the Arun, Adur, and Western Rother, while the southern coastline consists mainly of low cliffs, shingle beaches, and estuarine environments.
Geologically, West Sussex is dominated by Mesozoic sedimentary rocks associated with the Wealden–London Basin system. The South Downs, forming a prominent east–west ridge across the county, are composed chiefly of Upper Cretaceous chalk, creating a classic cuesta landscape with steep north-facing escarpments and gentler southern slopes. North of the Downs lies the Weald, underlain by Lower Cretaceous sandstones, siltstones, and clays, including the Weald Clay and Hastings Beds, which give rise to wooded ridges and low-lying vales. Along the coast and in river valleys, Palaeogene sands and clays and Quaternary gravels and alluvial deposits are widespread.
West Sussex has a modest but historically important extractive and industrial heritage linked to its geology. Quarrying of chalk supplied lime and building materials, while sand and gravel extraction from river terraces supported construction. The county formed part of the wider Wealden iron industry, with iron ore extracted from clay ironstones and smelted locally from Roman times through the medieval period. Clay deposits were also used for brick and tile manufacture, and flint from the chalk has been widely used in traditional buildings.
Administratively, West Sussex is divided into district and borough councils, with Chichester traditionally regarded as the county town. The county’s identity is closely tied to its chalk landscapes, fertile coastal plain, and long agricultural history. Its geology has played a key role in shaping settlement patterns, land use, architecture, and historic industries, particularly through the contrast between the open chalk downs of the South Downs and the wooded, clay-rich landscapes of the Weald.
