This barite deposit has been known for over half a century, and initially was the object of prospecting and hand work. In 1983, a trench was dug with a backhoe, but subsequent analysis concluded the deposit was not economically viable.
This occurrence is on private property, so permission should be secured to enter the premises.
The following info was drawn from the "fiche de gîte" (Deposit File) of the MRNF (Ministère des ressources naturelles et de la faune) :
The rock surrounding this baryte lens is a sandy dolostone containing quartz nodules and geodes, obviously pseudomorphs of sulfate nodules, with minor dolosparite apparently resulting from the recrystallation of dolostone. The alteration of this dolostone resulted in a karstic morphology. This barite prospect is lenticular, and measures some 38m x 30 m (120 x 100 ft).
Cavities up to 15cm (6 in.) delivered prismatic and tabular barite crystals to 5 cm (2 in.) on druzy quartz, a gemmy quartz crystal fragment, and chalcopyrite altered to brilliant-green malachite. And, saddle-shaped crystals, most probably dolomite.
