Veins with local, open vugs of drusy quartz crystals with associated bright red sphalerite and minor galena in tectonically brecciated Silurian Tuscarora Formation sandstone. Most of the mineralization was observed in the southeast face of an abandoned ganister quarry located at an elevation of 1300 feet (400m).
The Hares Valley Zn-Pb district was found by A. W. Rose and graduate students D. C. Herrick and R. C. Smith, II after Rose noted that the name Silver Mine Knob on the Butler Knob 7 1/2' topographic map coincided with stream sediment anomalies reported by M. L. Keith et al. (1967).
