Baryte mines on three parallel, roughly E-W oriented fault brecciated veins in Triassic New Haven arkose located on Jinny Hill about 1½ miles SE of Cheshire center. The mine, which was the first baryte mine in North America, was operated between 1838 and 1878 and produced about 160,000 tons of baryte ore (Fritts, 1961). The main vein extends for about 3/4 of a mile and is about a meter thick. The mine is at least 400 feet deep with 4 miles of tunnels. The baryte was used in paint manufacturing.

Fritts (1962) also says that the central vein was by far the richest of all the Cheshire deposits, including the much smaller mines in other parts of the town. Essentially all the best historic specimens came from this vein. The area is now covered with residential private property. Coordinates are for the approximate center of the central vein.

Description: Mostly massive to subhedral material, but good euhedral crystals can reach 1 dm and subparallel clusters can reach a meter. Large crystals tend to have transparent sections, smaller crystals translucent to opaque. Associated with drusy quartz, small isolated botryoidal malachite blebs or acicular sprays, rarer with blebs of copper sulfides, all on pinkish-red arkosic sandstone to conglomerate matrix. A partial, reddish coating may be present on many crystals.

Description: Thin secondary crusts associated with bornite and/or chalcocite. Easily confused with hematite.

Description: A couple of dozen or so cubic crystals about 7 mm on an edge occur in a pocket in massive quartz and barite with tiny galena cubes encrusted with malachite and cerussite. Some malachite underneath the fluorite crystals imparts a false greenish tinge to them.
