Locality named after the main reef, mining commenced in the late 1850's, more than 10 tons of gold was recovered from the early shallow workings.
In the early gold rush era Staffordshire Reef was considered part of the Italian Gully goldfields.
The existing very small town is South of Ballarat and just north of Berringa.
The reef extends over an area of approximately 2kms and numerous gold mines are located here.
