The Withlacoochee River in northern Florida (including Madison Co) is the source of beautiful chalcedony filled coral. It is typically called "agatized coral" but is actually a chalcedony pseudomorph after coral heads. Found in tertiary marine sediments, the coral was smothered in volcanic ash about 10 million years ago, leaving cavities which then filled with chalcedony.

The best known source of this material is Ballast Point in Tampa, but is also found in numerous locations in central and northern Florida. This material is the state mineral of Florida.
