Citadelløya is one of the classical localities in the Larvik plutonic complex in Norway. Several small syenite pegmatite dikes can be observed outside the walls of the fortress from around 1680s. Boulders of pegmatite syenite are also been used in the walls and buildings.
Here mineralogist found, in the beginning of the 19. century specimens of microcline showing a bluish schillerism, the so-called labradorizing feldspar (later named as cryptoperthite), large black amphiboles, zircon etc. These minerals together with several other of the classical Stavern minerals can still be observed today in situ.

Brøgger (1890) used an older name of the island, "Festningsøya" ("the Fortress Island" when translated). The island which was a former military fortress (Stavern (Fredriksvärn) Fort), is today a protected historical site and a recreational, public area.

In 1860 a breakwater was made that connected this island to the larger Stavernsøya.
