Cantera Minera I (Cantera Ávila), Cerro del Serrano, Lebrija, Sevilla, Andalucía, España


The "Minera I" quarry is located at Serrano Hill about 15 km ESE of Lebrija, Seville. It is an ophite quarry worked for crushed stone by Eiffage Infraestructuras. Previously, the quarry was named Ávila quarry. It is well known for the prehnites that show different morphologies and colours, but you can find also other minerals like amphiboles and fluorapatite.
Recent analysis (XRD) have confirmed that the amphibol belongs to the ferro-actinolite-tremolite series, closer to the tremolite end. It must be said that there is no a complete certainty because with complex amphiboles like these further analysis would be neccessary (polarised-light microscopy and EPMA).

La cantera "Minera I" está situada en el Cerro del Serrano, a 15 km al ESE de lebrija. Es una cantera de ofita explotada para obtener áridos de machaqueo por la empresa Eiffage Infraestructuras. Anteriormente fue explotada con el nombre de cantera "Ávila". Es bien conocida por los ejemplares de prehnita, de distintos colores y morfologías, pero también pueden encontrarse otros minerales como anfíboles y fluorapatito.
Análisis recientes de XRD han confirmado que el anfíbol presente pertenece a la serie de la ferro-actinolita-tremolite series, próximo al término tremolita. Hay que aclarar que para identificar con seguridad un ejemplar de los anfíboles complejos es necesario utilizar también otras técnicas, como microscopía de luz polarizada y EPMA.
