Salt mines were worked in the area since prehistoric times. After the Hungarian conquest, the Turda salt mines were first mentioned in 1075.
The mine was used as an anti-aircraft shelter in WWII.
The salt mines were closed in 1932 but have since been reopened for tourism.
The mine complex covers an area of some 45 km2 with average salt thickness of around 400 metres.
The mine complex comprises numerous chambers: Joseph Mine, Horses Room and Extraction Well Room. The complex also consists of a number of interconnected mines: Terezia Mine, Rudolph Mine, Gizela Mine and Anton Mine. Some of the mines are connected by the Franz Joseph Gallery.
